Kalmanovitz 15 Year Report

On November 10, 2009, Georgetown University formally launched the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor & the Working Poor (KI).  In the fifteen years that have passed since its creation, the KI has evolved into a unique entity among the nation’s campus-based labor centers.  It has produced pathbreaking and award-winning scholarship on workers, unions, and labor relations; it has incubated innovative ideas, new organizations, and national networks; it has acted as a convener capable of drawing together broad communities of interest around action agenda; it has trained hundreds of future leaders with a special emphasis on training women, immigrants, and people of color; and it has advocated for the rights of the working poor, especially those most on the margins.

The following report will survey the broad sweep, assess the impact of KI’s activities over the past 15 years, and sketch out its aspirations for the future. The KI’s accomplishments are the work of many hands—students, workers, researchers, stakeholders, partners, and supporters—beginning with the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation and Georgetown University, and especially Louis J. Giraudo and John J. DeGioia, to whom this report is gratefully dedicated.
