Joseph A. McCartin was the guest in the second hour of NPR’s The Diane Rehm Show on September 7.  He spoke about his forthcoming book, Collision Course: Ronald Reagan, the Air Traffic Controllers, and the Strike that Changed America, and addressed the attacks on collective bargaining that have recently roiled American politics.

The PATCO strike, McCartin contends, stemmed from a situation in which deeply aggrieved workers grew frustrated with their inability to bargain over the things that mattered most to them.  “My argument is that collective bargaining in government works. It’s worked pretty effectively over more than half a century in the places where it’s been,” he said.
