Georgetown Hosts Memorial for President John Sweeney

Posted in News

On May 5, a memorial service for AFL-CIO President Emeritus, John J. Sweeney was held in Gaston Hall at Georgetown University. President Sweeney passed away in February of 2021 but the pandemic prevented a large scale event from being held at that time. Georgetown University was asked to play host to the event, hosted in President Sweeney’s birthday.

Hundreds of movement leaders and members of the Sweeney family gathered to remember the iconic labor leader, speaking of his commitment to faith, family, and union. Speakers included the Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and AFL-CIO President Liz Schuler. The Kalmanovitz Initiative was honored to play a role in the event, with Executive Director Joseph McCartin giving remarks at the service. You can view the recording of the event from the AFL-CIO on Youtube.
