Mia Campbell (COL ‘18) is a pre-med student majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies and minoring in Sociology. This summer Mia will be interning with ONE DC. Although she has only been on the Hilltop for a year, Mia has become very involved on campus. She serves as the co-publicity chair for Georgetown University Minority Association of Pre-Health Students, is a founding member of the Last Campaign for Academic Reform, and will serve as a member of the Provost’s Committee for Diversity in the coming year. Mia is very excited to be involved in progressive community organizing, equitable development, and resident-led policy change in DC this summer.

Clara Mejia

Clara

Clara Mejia (COL ’17) is majoring in Justice and Peace Studies and American Studies with a concentration on migration and labor. Clara was born and raised in Mexico and moved to the United States at age 17. She joins us from sunny East L.A., where she did a lot of community-based service around food justice and immigration. Her interest on underserved communities originated at East L.A. Renaissance Academy, School of Urban Planning and Design, where she learned about key issues that impacted her new community. Clara became an agent of change through working with Public Matters, an innovative L.A.-based interdisciplinary social enterprise that incorporates media and other creative strategies for education and civic engagement projects that yield long-term community benefits. During her time at Georgetown she has focus on bringing awareness to issues that impact undocumented students at Georgetown. She is currently co-chair of Hoyas for Immigrant Rights and is beyond excited to work with the Employment Justice Center this summer!

Kevin Ruano

Kevin

Kevin Ruano (SFS ’18) doesn’t quite know what he wants to study but definitely knows where he is from. Born in El Salvador and raised in the local DMV area, he is very excited to work with the local working poor community. At Georgetown he has been a part of the Day Laborer Exchange, a coalition of GU students and local DC day labors attempting to establish a Worker’s Center, and La Casa Latin@ Campaign which is trying to establish a permanent space for GU Latin@s. Seeking to affirm the dignity of all marginalized identities, Kevin hopes his summer experience with ONE DC will inform his aspiring organizer/writer for the marginalized ambitions.

Chris Wager

Chris

Chris Wager (SFS ’17), a native Houstonian, is studying Culture and Politics with a focus on cultural productions of the labor and migrant justice movements. He has been organizing with Trabajadores Unidos through the Day Laborer Exchange Program since his first semester at Georgetown, and he feels hopeful about continuing to build power alongside migrant workers this summer. On campus, Chris is also active with the Georgetown Solidarity Committee and Hoyas for Immigrant Rights. Chris enjoys reading and jamming to Chicanx poetry and music, playing soccer, and riding his bike in search of murals and artivism in DC.

DK Yun

DK

Do Kyung Yun (COL ’16) is studying Sociology. He is from Koreatown, Los Angeles, and has been active in the area’s worker center, the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance, where he has conducted community outreach around worker rights and immigrant issues. In DC, he is involved in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program as a Certified Tax Preparer, helping low-income families complete and maximize their tax returns, and he has worked on various research projects with the AFL-CIO. The past summer, as a GU Impacts Fellow he spent eight weeks in Panama, living and collaborating with a rural community to develop socially innovative projects from the ground up, and he is extremely grateful to have had such opportunities to engage with different people and communities around the world. He will keep these experiences in the forefront of his mind as he works with the KI and DC Jobs with Justice to fight for dignity in every workplace.
