ONE DC anniversary

Vincent DeLaurentis (SFS ’17) is currently interning with ONE DC through the KI Summer Organizing program. Vincent is also a student leader (new window) for the 2017 Worker Justice DC alternative break program.

On June 18th, Organizing Neighborhood Equity, better known as ONE DC (new window), will host its 10th anniversary celebration (new window). For those who do not know, ONE DC is an incredible community organization, based in Shaw, that organizes alongside working class and poor, historically black communities in the District of Columbia to fight for fair, affordable housing, the preservation of traditionally black communities, and mental and physical well-being for its members. ONE DC is steeped in a deep ethic of solidarity, allowing residents of these communities to take charge of their own struggles and lead the way to their own liberation.

ONE DC has also proven to be an important resource for Georgetown students, like me, in our social justice work on campus and in the wider DC community. Through summer and semester internships, I and other student organizers have learned valuable lessons in community organizing and participatory democracy. More importantly, through engagement with both ONE DC organizers and DC communities resisting displacement, student organizers from Georgetown have been challenged to critically reassess their framework for justice work.

The event on June 18th will celebrate this legacy of solidarity, struggle, and community strength, bringing together community members, local organizers and activists, and current and former ONE DC members. Tickets for the event will raise money for ONE DC’s ongoing organizing activities. The day will kick off with a community marketplace, composed of local community organizations and businesses. Next, scholars-in-struggle Dr. ANGELA DAVIS and Dr. BARBARA RANSBY will present on the current state of movements and struggles for liberation and answer questions from the audience. Finally, the day will end with a Go Go Party for all attendees.
